Sometimes fitting in while standing out becomes the goal of a building. When we built Apache ASL Trails in Tempe, Arizona, we designed and constructed the exterior to incorporate the popular stucco look commonly used in the Southwest. However, we designed the interior to stand out among other buildings: Apache has design elements that improve Deaf people’s living experience. From strong internet connection for video phone use, lighted doorbells and alarm systems, video phone connection from the apartments to the vestibules for guests, open concept kitchens for improved lines of sight, ASL communication is simpler and amenities  help protect our residents who might not always know there could be an emergency in the building. While Apache ASL Trails is designed with Deaf people in mind, many hearing people enjoy these amenities as well.
