Veterans Manor - Milwaukee
In the Marines they teach recruits to Improvise, Adapt and Overcome, and that is exactly what Cardinal Construction had to do as we built Veterans Manor Milwaukee. Our first supporting housing project for veterans, the site was crucially located very close to the headquarters of The Center for Veterans Issue (CVI), in the gateway to downtown Milwaukee, and what the city called a “catalytic” site on what is the busiest transit corner in all of Milwaukee. The two parcels we combined had been vacant, broken concrete for decades.
Our team was aware that prior petroleum contamination existed under where the building was going to stand and in the parking lot. With monitoring from the Wisconsin DNR,we excavated and properly disposed of contaminated soils. We placed a thicker gas proof membrane on the soil before pouring the parking garage. We also installed an appropriate ventilation system to ensure emissions would not be released into the building. The contamination in the parking lot area was capped per DNR regulations.
